Understanding Management of Varicose Veins
The standard approach to managing varicose veins has entailed surgery for many decades. Alternatives including sclerotherapy are offered but are often an incomplete solution. Over the past decade the use of a less invasive technique , endovenous ablation(EVA) using laser, radiofrequency or mechanical energy has become a highly successful alternative. In BC and in fact most of Canada EVA is not covered by the provincial health plans and so is only provided in a private setting. The cost is borne by the patient but can be claimed as a health care expense through Revenue Canada. Patients can also apply for a HST/GST rebate through Revenue Canada. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and has far less down time for recovery and lower risks of complications. We discuss all options with every patient so they can make an informed choice.
